Players who I am avoiding at current ADP

By: Josh Frey-Sam

If you’re drafting already, shame on you. It’s too early.

Maybe that’s a bit of jealousy coming out. I’m itching to draft.

If you haven’t drafted yet, now is probably a good time to note a few players I’m actively avoiding at their current draft position. All of these players can present a value if they slide far enough — and some of them will — I just don’t see myself selecting any of the following players:

Quarterback

Jayden Daniels

I love Jayden Daniels. I think he’s an awesome player and one of the future faces of this league. But there’s way too much that scares me with him to draft him in the third round.

First off, is Terry McLaurin playing? I assume something will get done with his contract, but he’s the clear No. 1 in this offence, and without him, the potential targets for Daniels look bleak. We’re talking Deebo Samuel, who is one cheeseburger away from switching to tight end, Noah Brown, Luke McCaffrey, who I actually think is a sleeper breakout target this season, and 34-year-old Zach Ertz.

I don’t think Daniels will hurt anyone’s team — his rushing ability will always make him a starting option — but I can’t bring myself to draft him at this cost. If I’m spending early, I’d much rather have Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson or Jalen Hurts.

Running back

Breece Hall

The earliest subscribers of this newsletter know we’ve been on this one since April.

Frankly, it wouldn’t totally shock me if Breece Hall was traded by Week 1.

This is a contract year for him, and all signs point to the Jets moving on with Braelon Allen as their lead back after this season. If Hall does stick around in East Rutherford, it feels like it’ll be in a timeshare that includes Allen and possibly Isaiah Davis.

Hall is going in the third round right now — you’re potentially drafting him as your RB1, or at worst, with the hope he’s a high-end RB2.

I have no idea what his floor or ceiling is in this offence. Not to mention, his rushing touchdowns will be limited with Justin Fields there.

I’m not sure how anyone can trust him.

Honourable mentions: David Montgomery & Quinshon Judkins

Wide receiver

Terry McLaurin

This one hurts. I hate throwing a former Buckeye on this list. I’ve loved Terry’s career; I think he’s always been criminally underrated.

Having said that, there are some things working against him that make his late-third, early-fourth round cost too pricey. Does he actually have an ankle injury, or is this just a contract dispute cover-up? Either way, he’s not practising.

While he and Daniels have a clear connection, he is still losing valuable practice reps.

The other thing is Terry is due for a regression. He’s about to be 30 and is coming off a career-best year of 82 receptions, 1,096 yards and 13 touchdowns.

The 13 scores is a classic regression spot, and I’m not sure he sees enough volume to make up for the drop in touchdowns and get him back into the top 10.

Go get that bag, Terry. You deserve it. But you won’t be on my team.

Honourable mention: Rashee Rice

Tight end

N/A

To be honest, I like the tight ends at all their prices right now.

Not sure that I will take one early, personally, but I don’t hate someone jumping on one early.

I actually think the position presents a ton of potential value.

That’s for another day, though.

Thanks for reading and, as always, have a great day.
